Jonathan’s SANE Story: A Lifetime of inSANEity Reversed in Less Than One Year*

…I landed at 230LBS …In the first week I dropped about 10-15 pounds. Now after about a year of eating as close to SANE as possible I weigh in at 158 LBS. I used to wear a size 40 pant, now I’m in a 30. I had to wear XL shirts, now I am in a Small. I recently just gave all of my old clothes from the past 10 years to goodwill and have never felt better in my life. I cook all the time and my friends and family have gotten to see an awesome change in my life.

At the start of my journey with food I was always told to “clean your plate” and “waste not want not”. This essentially lead to my problem of never being able to have left overs. I would always feel bad if I did not finish what was in front of me.

Growing up my parents bought processed/ low quality foods because it was what we could afford. My brother and I call it “Poor food” We are talking about Mac and Cheese with SPAM, 2-3 Grilled cheese sandwiches and sugary cereal every morning, TV dinners and fast food.

Middle school through high school I slowly gained weight. I did have one year where I joined a drum and bugle corps that basically feed us large amounts of food and ran us for about 16 hours of the day learning a marching band show. So when I returned from our tour I had this enormous appetite but no will power to continue the exercise. With the poor diet at home and no will power I gained weight even faster.

Once I got into college I had gone back and forth with weight loss. I tried all the low calorie foods and whole grain way but was starving to death. I didn’t understand that when I ate special K, fruit and skim milk why I was still hungry 20 minutes later. I was starving and trying to push my self to make it to the next food allowance, my whole wheat sandwich with reduced fat chips. But again I was starving 20 minutes later and finally giving up by dinner and eating everything in site. This went on for years. Every time I tried, I failed. Every time I failed I gained even more weight. So something was wrong. I landed at 230LBS and fed up with the fact that I wasn’t strong enough to beat it.

During this time I also went through a divorce and ended up changing jobs and moving closer to my brother. I took a job as a road salesman and thought that It would be nice to add some podcast to my iPhone for the road. This is when I ran across you (SANE founder Jonathan Bailor) and Able James. I was blown away instantly when everything I was hearing was challenging what I was taught for years. So I said what the heck let me try this out, all I can do is fail again right? WRONG! I took some basic principals from that podcast. “Eat fat to burn fat” “low starchy veggies” low fructose fruits” “no processed foods”. This just kept playing through my head every time I went to eat. In the first week I dropped about 10-15 pounds. So I started to adjust my diet slowly in order to combat my cravings.

I started by changing breakfast. With free range eggs and a mountain of veggies (usually sautéed in real butter). What I found was so surprising, I was full past breakfast. So I adapted lunch. I love salads so I took again as many low starchy veggies I could find and made a huge salad. This kept me full till dinner which I again loaded down with veggies and mixed up my protein.

Now after about a year of eating as close to SANE as possible I weigh in at 158 LBS. I used to wear a size 40 pant, now I’m in a 30. I had to wear XL shirts, now I am in a Small.

I recently just gave all of my old clothes from the past 10 years to goodwill and have never felt better in my life. I cook all the time and my friends and family have gotten to see an awesome change in my life.
